MORE REALLY BAD POETRY
May 20th
There is definitely great pleasure to be got from reading truly awful poetry and here is another master of the genre. The poet Adam Lindsay Gordon lived from 1833 until 1870 and gave the world some unique poetry during that time. One of his more memorable poems was entitled “The travails of war”. Here are four lines from the work which will , hopefully, put a smile on your face:
“Flash ! flash ! bang ! bang ! and we blazed away
And the grey roof reddened and rang
Flash ! flash ! and I felt his bullet flay
The tip of my ear, flash ! bang !”
These lines, and several other treasures are to be found in Stephen Piles wonderful work, THE BOOK OF HEROIC FAILURES which is warmly recommended. It is published by Futura books.
THE WORST POET EVER
May 18th
It is generally agreed that the 16th century poet George Wither was the worst poet of all times. Of course you will now want a small sample of the work of this great man. This is a short extract from one of his masterpieces called “I loved a lass”:
She would me ‘Honey’ call
She’d – O she’d kiss me too
But now alas ! she’s left me
Falero, lero, loo
Hope it gives you as much enjoyment as it has given me. If only I could find a book of the man’s work…but so far only this gem !
