NOTE: There are quite a few chords in this version because they give it a beautiful melodic feel which I think lifts the song. If they are proving too many to handle, especially early on, then I suggest you just use the main chords of CF and G at first and then gradually add some or all of the others as you begin to feel more comfortable with it. If you need any advice on it e-mail me ! Best of luck with it.
Lyrics of Red is the Rose
Oct 11th
C Am Dm F G
Come over the hill my bonnie Irish girl
C Am F EM
Come over the hill to your darling
F C Dm F
You’ll choose the road love and I’ll make the vow
C F C G C
And I’ll be your true love forever
C Am Dm F G
CHORUS: Red is the rose, that in yonder garden grows
C Am F Em
Fair is the Lily of the Valley
F G C F Am G
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
C F C G C
But my love is fairer than any
It was down by Killarney’s green woods that we strayed
The moon and the stars they were shining
And the moon cast it’s rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she’d be my love forever
CHORUS
It’s not for the parting with my sister Kate
It’s not for the grief of my mother
It’s all for the loss of my bonnie Irish girl
That my heart is breaking forever
CHORUS TWICE TO END
NOTE: You can use either a G or an Em on the last word of the second line of both verse and chorus. I have varied it here and played Em first few times and G later on just to show the variation. I personally prefer the Em option but it is your own choice.
Lyrics of The Whistling Gypsy
Aug 2nd
The gypsy rover came over the hill
down to the valley so shady
he whistled and he sang till the green woods rang
and he won the heart of a lady
CHORUS: Ah dee doo ah dee doo daw day
ah dee doo ah dee day dee
He whistled and he sang, till the green woods rang
and he won the heart of a lady
she left her father’s castle walls
she left her own fond lover
she left her servants and her estate
to follow the gypsy rover
CHORUS
her father saddled up his fastest steed
and rode the wild woods over
and sought his daughter at great speed
and the whistling gypsy rover
CHORUS
he rode till he came to a castle fine
down by the river Clady
and there was music and there was wine
for the gypsy and his lady
“he is no gypsy, my father” she said
“but lord of these lands all over
and I will stay ’till my dying day
with my whistling gypsy rover
